eDiscovery

Electronic discovery, or eDiscovery, is the process of identifying, preserving, reviewing, and producing electronically stored information for investigations or legal matters.

eDiscovery tools help authorized teams find and handle information relevant to a matter. Microsoft Purview, for example, can work across sources such as Exchange, Teams, SharePoint, and OneDrive. The tool’s ability to collect content does not establish that a particular request is approved.

Before exporting a case

The case purpose, search scope, export options, and destination each affect what information moves. Approving a search is not necessarily approval to send its results to a new recipient. Our eDiscovery-export article follows those decisions separately.

Microsoft’s export guidance distinguishes preparing results from downloading them. It also distinguishes signed-in download links from optional pre-authorized links: possession of a pre-authorized link can permit a download until expiry. Microsoft says these links are intended for the generating user’s downloads, not sharing with others.

Identify the approved operator and recipient before producing a package. Preserve the scope and settings used, then deliver through the organization’s approved channel. Expiration of a service-side package does not remove copies already downloaded.
