Device management enrollment

Device management enrollment establishes a relationship between a device and a management service so the organization can apply supported configuration and management controls. Enrollment is separate from creating a device identity and from assessing compliance.

Giving the organization a way to manage a device

Mobile device management, or MDM, lets an organization manage supported device settings. Microsoft distinguishes Intune enrollment from Microsoft Entra registration: registration gives a device a directory identity; enrollment enables management capabilities, such as enforcing configuration requirements.

Compliance is another step. Intune policies assess requirements, and Conditional Access can use the result. Being enrolled does not tell you which policies were assigned or whether the device met them.

Find the management record

If a device appears in Entra, look for its matching record in the management system before calling it managed. If you cannot find one, management enrollment is unverified.

Once you find it, check assigned configuration and compliance policies, the report time, and how the service handles devices without a compliance policy. Match device IDs across systems rather than relying on names alone.

These records help explain the device’s configuration. They do not independently show that it was free of malicious activity or that a user completed an operation in an application.
